yawn... been out as part of Toast 7 since August.

Exactly, and Toast is $79.95 while DivX alone is $19.99.
Many people don't get Toast because it's too expensive. Now there's an alternative that enables encoding without Toast.

Can anyone tell me what is the real advantage over H.264 for encoding my own media?

I saw Toast at MacMall for $40 after rebates. What's nice about Toast is that it can also take a DVD can go to DivX... what DivX is selling can't handle MPEG2.

Well, $40 still ain't $20 however you put it :) I think it's still news since it's released by itself for the first time. Toast does offer more possibilities but not everyone likes to use it or needs all the extras.
BTW, that rebate ends today :)

Advantages over H.264? Well H.264 produces extremely good quality video with file sizes usually smaller to the same as standard mpg. I have never used DivX encoder but I believe the only advantage is that H.264 takes a long time to encode and takes more processing power to play while DivX (probably) doesn't.
